Theories of ResistanceThrough conducting research, it was found that the structural-functionalist perspective, conflict theory, gender labeling, and socialist feminism has been used as explanations for occupational resistance towards females working in law enforcement. All of these theories directly relate to the basis for understanding oppression at the institutional level. For example, this would relate to gendered job assignments. These theories imply that what is socially viewed as masculine occupations should be dominated by men.

Gender Equality and Challenges in Law Enforcement
Civil Rights and affirmative action laws paved the way for women to assume law enforcement jobs that were traditionally held my men.Women have traditionally been thought of as having little to no physical strength, are very emotional, and are not able to assert aggression as would a man. Women on average do weigh less, are shorter, and have less physical strength than men, but this does not hinder them from being as capable as a man when performing police duties. This is where training and education plays a role. Law enforcement is not gender biased in relation to pay scales. Each officer is paid by rank and experience whether they are male or female. |
